Calne is the largest of the towns we cover from Chippenham, with 19,074 residents at the 2021 census, sitting about six miles east of our base.

The town grew up on the River Marden — it is the only town on that river, which rises a couple of miles away in the Wessex Downs. Riverside and low-lying properties are worth mentioning when you enquire, because the nearest place to put a van is often further from the door than it looks on a map.

For most of the twentieth century Calne was a factory town: the C&T Harris pork processing works employed around 2,000 people at its peak, closed in 1982 and was demolished over the two years that followed. The housing that surrounds the old site is a mix of Victorian terraces and later infill, which in practice means narrow frontages, shared access and a lot of first-floor and loft clearances.

Because Calne is a straightforward run east from Chippenham, it suits jobs that need a second visit — but we would still rather scope the whole load properly first and do it in one.
