Box is a village of 4,404 people at the 2021 census, about seven miles south-west of our Chippenham base, three miles west of Corsham and five miles north-east of Bath.

It sits above the steep-sided valley of the By Brook, and that slope is what makes clearances here different from flat-town jobs. Properties on the valley sides often have stepped approaches, limited turning space and no realistic place to park directly outside. We would rather know that when quoting than discover it with a van full of furniture.

Box was one of the great Bath stone quarrying villages — the Box Ground stone was extracted in millions of tons, with quarrying peaking between 1880 and 1909 and continuing until 1969. The village is full of stone cottages from that period, which tend to mean narrow staircases, low doorways and small rooms that fill up faster than people expect.

The village is best known for Brunel's Box Tunnel, driven beneath Box Hill between 1838 and 1841 and running for just under two miles. It is a useful landmark when you are describing where a property sits, and we are happy to work from that rather than a postcode if the address is hard to find.
